Tropical Storm Dolly formed over the Atlantic Ocean on Aug. 27, 2026, far from land but on a track that could bring heavy rain to parts of the Caribbean. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the system was about 1,555 miles, or 2,500 kilometres, to the east of the Leeward Islands. Its maximum sustained winds were 40 mph, or 64 kph.
Dolly was moving west, with little change in strength expected over the following several days. No coastal watches or warnings were in force on the event date. Forecasters nevertheless said rainfall could reach the Leeward Islands on Saturday and Sunday, followed by the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola on Sunday and Monday. Flash flooding was possible in affected areas.
The storm became the fourth named system of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. Earlier storms included Arthur, which reached the U.S. Gulf Coast in June; Bertha, which brought rain to Louisiana and Texas in July; and Cristobal, which formed and dissipated in August.
The World Meteorological Organization's established naming procedure, rather than current events involving a person with the same name, determined Dolly's designation. The supplied report noted that the storm and its name had no connection with the death of singer Dolly Parton two days earlier. Atlantic storm names are arranged alphabetically, alternate between male and female names and are generally reused on a six-year cycle.
Weather agencies use short and recognisable storm names to communicate hazards clearly and reduce confusion when multiple systems are active. The WMO periodically reviews the lists and may retire a name when a storm has been especially destructive or deadly. Melissa, a Category 5 hurricane that caused devastation in the Caribbean, was retired after the 2025 season.
Dolly formed on a day when two tropical storms, Karina and Lowell, also developed in the Pacific. Neither Pacific storm had prompted a coastal watch or warning, although forecasters said swells generated by Karina could produce dangerous surf and rip currents along parts of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.
For the Atlantic season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had forecast below-average activity associated with El Niño. Its outlook called for eight to 14 named storms, including three to six hurricanes and one to three major hurricanes.
Dolly's immediate concern was therefore rainfall rather than rapid strengthening or a direct land strike. People in the forecast Caribbean areas still faced a developing flash-flood risk and were awaiting later advisories as the storm continued westward. Further National Hurricane Center updates would refine the rainfall threat as the system approached the island chain.
