The U.S. Geological Survey concluded that a glacial collapse, rather than an earthquake, triggered the destructive flood that struck Nepal and Tibet on Aug. 26, 2026. The collapse produced a seismic signal as ice and rock fell, then sent a powerful flow of water, mud and debris downstream.

Initial reporting had described a possible earthquake near the border. The USGS later revised that interpretation, identifying the source as the glacier collapse. Nepalese officials said the collapse occurred on the Nepal side of the Himalayan range. The distinction matters because the recorded shaking was an effect of the mass movement, not evidence that a tectonic earthquake initiated the disaster.

By the following day, Nepalese authorities said at least 389 people had died and more than 900 were missing. Three deaths and at least 558 missing people were reported in Tibet. Because the flood crossed the border and accounting was incomplete, it was unclear whether the national missing-person figures overlapped.

The debris flow destroyed homes, covered roads and swept away bridges, leaving rescuers in Nepal and Tibet searching across a wide and difficult area. Nepal Police said 466 people had been injured and rescued by Thursday evening. Excavators were clearing mud in Nuwakot, while relatives and organisations tried to locate pilgrims, workers and residents who had been in the flood zone.

Among those unaccounted for were foreign visitors travelling through the region. Nepal's tourism board had reported 178 missing Indian tourists, while India's government said 290 of its citizens were not contactable, a figure that appeared to include workers as well as visitors. India said 84 citizens had been rescued, including 63 workers from the Trishuli-I hydropower project and 21 people from Tamil Nadu.

International assistance began to arrive. India sent ten metric tons of temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines. The United States committed $500,000 in emergency relief and deployed a disaster-response adviser. Britain pledged £5 million, while the Red Cross launched a $31 million appeal after releasing $1.25 million for the immediate response.

A growing lake near the border created a further danger because it could breach and cause another flood. Red Cross teams adjusted the movement of supplies as authorities considered the risk to people downstream.

The USGS finding resolved one major question about the origin of the seismic reading, but it did not remove the continuing hazards. On the event date, rescuers still faced unstable terrain, deep mud, broken access routes and the possibility of secondary flooding, while casualty and missing-person totals continued to change.
