The National Football League is eliminating the standalone Pro Bowl event, ending an all-star tradition that has existed in various forms since 1951 while preserving the designation as an individual honor for leading players.

League executives presented the change to team owners on Aug. 26, 2026, the date. Under the new arrangement, the NFL will no longer stage a tackle game, flag-football contest or series of Pro Bowl games. Instead, 88 players will be selected and invited to an in-person celebration in Los Angeles in February.

The selection system itself will remain in place. Fans, players and coaches will continue to vote, with each group accounting for an equal share of the result. The final roster will cover offensive, defensive and special-teams positions across the AFC and NFC.

A significant change concerns alternates. Only the original 88 selections will receive Pro Bowl recognition, and replacement players will no longer be acknowledged as Pro Bowlers. NFL executives said repeated substitutions had diluted an award intended to identify the season's best performers. Participation by alternates had grown as selected players withdrew or prepared for the Super Bowl.

The league has repeatedly revised the event in an effort to address concerns about competitiveness and relevance. It abandoned the conference format for a fantasy-draft model in 2013, restored the AFC-versus-NFC structure in 2016 and moved away from its longtime Hawaii setting after the 2015 edition. In 2022, it introduced skills competitions and flag football in place of the traditional tackle game.

Those adjustments did not settle the event's underlying problems. The NFL had surveyed players over several years, and football operations executive Troy Vincent Sr. spoke with more than a dozen prominent players during the summer. Their feedback emphasized a desire to restore the distinction attached to selection and to celebrate all honorees properly, including players whose teams reach the Super Bowl.

Audience figures also weakened after another scheduling experiment. Post-pandemic Pro Bowl broadcasts had drawn between 4.7 million and 6.7 million viewers, but the most recent edition attracted about 2 million after the event shifted from its usual Sunday-before-the-Super-Bowl window to the preceding Tuesday. It was held in a convention center in the Super Bowl host city.

NFL executive Peter O'Reilly said the league considered the loss of a televised event but returned to whether the competition properly represented the sport and its leading players. The new format places the emphasis on the honor rather than a game that had struggled to command full participation.

The decision closes the competitive-event chapter of the Pro Bowl without removing the title from player résumés. Selection can carry salary implications, and the recognition has long formed part of how careers are assessed. The February celebration is intended to preserve that value while limiting the honor to the initial group chosen through the established vote.
