On Aug. 26, 2026, massive flash floods swept through the Nepal-China border region, killing at least 160 people and leaving hundreds of tourists, workers and residents missing. Nepal police reported at least 157 deaths, while Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported three deaths in Tibet's Gyirong County.

The disaster began when an avalanche of ice and rock collapsed in the Himalayas and sent debris downstream. The U.S. Geological Survey initially recorded what appeared to be an earthquake north of Kathmandu, but later concluded that no earthquake had occurred. Its revised analysis identified a magnitude 5.2 glacial collapse, based on seismic data, long-period waves and satellite imagery.

Floodwaters and thick debris struck communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems. Images from Nepal's Nuwakot district showed damaged homes, buried vehicles and mud reaching upper floors. Officials said at least 19 bridges and nearly 40 kilometres of road were swept away, disrupting travel and access to affected settlements. Hydropower projects and villages were also damaged.

Nepalese authorities said 403 people were reported missing, including 341 foreign nationals. The Nepal Tourism Board said 133 Indian pilgrims travelling toward Mount Kailash were among them, alongside citizens of the United States, Australia, Britain and Canada. At least 62 missing Nepalese citizens had been trekking around Gosaikunda Lake during the Janai Purnima period, and 28 police officers were also unaccounted for.

On the Tibetan side, CCTV reported 265 people missing in Gyirong County. Because the affected area straddles the border and reporting was still developing, it was not clear whether any Nepalese and Chinese totals overlapped.

Officials warned people to avoid the banks of the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli and Narayani rivers as rescue work continued. Nepal requested assistance from both India and China. India offered humanitarian support, while United Nations bodies began preparing for what a UN spokesperson described as a substantial humanitarian need. South Korea reported nine citizens working on a hydropower project missing, while Malaysia said agencies had lost contact with 11 nationals believed to be in Rasuwa. Several foreign governments were trying to account for citizens travelling or working in the disaster zone.

Scientists cautioned against drawing an immediate, definitive connection between this single event and climate change. Researchers nevertheless noted that warming and thawing can weaken Himalayan glaciers, permafrost and slopes. They were examining satellite images, rainfall, possible river blockages and whether melting ice or water destabilised the collapse zone.

The evolving toll and the difficulty of reaching steep, damaged valleys meant the full scale of the disaster remained uncertain at the end of the event date.
