Canada’s women defeated the United States 27–20 to win the IFAF Flag Football World Championship on August 16, 2026, completing an unbeaten tournament. On the same day, the Canadian men earned a place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics with a 34–26 victory over Mexico in the third-place game.

The women had already secured Olympic qualification by beating top-ranked Mexico 20–6 in Saturday’s semi-final. Their victory over the defending champion United States then delivered the world title. Frédérique Morneau threw three touchdown passes for Canada, while quarterback Sara Parker connected with Caroline Moquin-Joubert for the team’s other score.

The result was Canada’s third women’s world championship in flag football, according to the event description. Winning the final carried no additional Olympic qualification requirement because the semi-final result had already ensured a ticket, but it completed a perfect campaign and placed Canada ahead of the host nation in the title match.

Canada’s men followed a different route. A semi-final loss to Italy ended their chance of winning the championship, leaving the third-place game as the path to Los Angeles. Because the American men had reached the final and automatically held a host berth, Canada’s meeting with Mexico became a direct contest for the remaining qualifying position.

Quarterback Michael O’Connor passed for 294 yards and five touchdowns in the 34–26 win. Former NFL tight end Antony Auclair recorded 149 receiving yards and caught two touchdown passes. Daniel Petermann also scored twice, and James Drysdale added Canada’s other touchdown.

The United States later beat Italy 42–26 in the men’s final. Under the qualification arrangement reported from the championships, the top two teams in each flag event, excluding the already qualified American hosts, received Olympic places. That rule allowed Canada’s men to qualify through the bronze-medal match while the women had secured their berth one round earlier.

Flag football is scheduled to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The Canadian results therefore combined an immediate championship with a longer-term milestone: both national teams would be represented when the sport first entered the Olympic programme. The women left the world championships as unbeaten title winners after defeating Mexico and the United States in the medal rounds. The men recovered from their semi-final defeat to claim the specific placing required for qualification, supported by O’Connor’s five-touchdown performance. Both qualification outcomes were secured during the championships’ final weekend.
