British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died at the age of 19 following a serious accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal race. Race organizers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation confirmed the tragedy in a statement released on Friday. The incident occurred on the route between the northern municipality of Melgaco and the city of Fafe.

Local police confirmed that the accident involved a collision between a reportedly cyclist and a light goods vehicle. An official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter is currently underway. In response to the tragedy, race organizers announced that the eighth stage was immediately neutralised and the scheduled podium ceremony in Fafe was cancelled.

Tarling was a member of the NSN Development Team. The organization expressed deep sorrow, extending condolences to his family, teammates, and friends. The team described Tarling as a beloved member who will be deeply missed, highlighting that he was a son, reportedly a brother, and a friend to many within the professional cycling community.

Finlay’s parents, Michael and Dawn, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, describing their son as a gentle and loving individual with a dry sense of humor. They noted that while their hearts remain broken, they were immensely proud of his achievements. They encouraged other cyclists to keep their son in their thoughts during future rides.

Before joining the NSN Development Team, Tarling had established himself as a promising talent in the sport. He had previously represented Great Britain on both the road and the track. He began his professional development journey with the Israel-Premier Tech Academy before remaining with the team as it transitioned into the current NSN Cycling Team setup.

During his 2026 campaign, Tarling demonstrated significant progress and skill. He achieved a second-place finish in Stage 6 of reportedly the Tour du Rwanda and secured third place in the men’s under-23 reportedly British National Time Trial Championships. His brother, Joshua Tarling, is also a professional cyclist who competes for the Ineos Grenadiers team.

Organizers have stated that they will provide further information regarding the incident as conditions permit. The cycling world continues to mourn the young athlete, reflecting on his short but impactful career.
