Archaeologists in Iraq have discovered approximately 40 ancient tombs following a significant decline in water levels at the Mosul Dam reservoir. The site is located in the Khanke region of Duhok province, which has been severely impacted by years of persistent drought. Officials confirmed that the tombs are estimated to be more than 2,300 years old, dating back to the Hellenistic or Hellenistic-Seleucid era.
Bekas Brefkany, the director reportedly of antiquities in Duhok, is leading the excavation efforts. His team had previously surveyed the area in 2023, identifying only minor traces of the structures. It was only this year, as water levels dropped to their lowest point, that the team was able to conduct a full excavation of the site. The discovery is one of several archaeological finds uncovered in the region due to the ongoing climate crisis.
Iraq is currently facing extreme environmental challenges, including rising temperatures and chronic water shortages. Authorities report that this year has reportedly been one of the driest since 1933, with national water reserves falling to just eight percent of their total capacity. These conditions have forced the country to grapple with significant impacts on both agricultural output and electricity production.
While the drought has created a humanitarian and economic crisis, it has simultaneously provided a unique window for researchers to explore submerged historical sites. Brefkany noted that the extreme climate conditions allow for excavation work that would otherwise be impossible. The current priority for the team is to extract the artifacts and tombs for preservation at the Duhok Museum before the reservoir levels rise again.
Beyond domestic climate factors, Iraqi officials have pointed to the impact of upstream dam construction in neighboring Iran and Turkey. These projects have significantly reduced the flow of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which have served as the lifeblood of the region for millennia. The reduction in water flow continues to exacerbate the drying of reservoirs across the northern provinces.
This discovery adds to a growing list of ancient ruins unearthed in the Mosul Dam reservoir area over the last five years. As the team works to document the site, they are racing against the changing water levels to ensure these historical findings are protected. The tombs represent a significant link to the region's Hellenistic past, offering new insights into ancient burial practices.
The archaeological team remains committed to the preservation of these sites despite the challenging working conditions. The findings will undergo further study at the museum to better understand their historical and cultural significance.
